Profile

Since 2000, I have operated Amy Charlson Design, an independent graphic design consultancy based outside Chicago. Relying on 30+ years of professional experience, I help my clients create and maintain coherent visual brands with communication materials of all types. My working relationships are built upon open communication, collaboration, and a keen understanding of client needs and objectives. Effective problem-solving, solid project management, strong client service, and partnership with industry specialists bring my clients’ projects successfully from conception through delivery.

Before launching my business, I worked full-time at graphic design firms and in-house corporate and university design departments, including Liska & Associates, Andersen Worldwide, Continental Bank, and Northwestern University. I have a bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and am a member of AIGA, the professional association for design.

Process

While every project has unique objectives and challenges, the design development process is similar for every client. It starts with an in-depth conversation, in which you’ll help me thoroughly understand your business. I’ll assess your expectations, your existing materials, and your audiences. Collaborative brainstorming will follow, and then I’ll develop potential design directions for your review. We will discuss these options and make further refinements, as needed. I work closely with talented specialists, including communication strategists, writers, artists, and web developers, and I’ll build a customized team as needed to ensure your brand is cohesively applied across all media.

My work continues through the production stage. As project manager, I oversee all aspects of the project to see that it progresses smoothly from start to finish. I’ll work with trusted printers and other vendors to ensure the highest possible quality. I remain involved throughout the process until your communication materials are delivered, in good order, on budget, and on time.
